Nissan’s Canton, Mississippi assembly plant employees have been very generous since operations began there in 2003. It is estimated that this facility itself has donated more than $7 million dollars to various community organizations as well as serving as volunteers. This year will be no exception as the more than 5,000 employees have pledged to contribute over $350,000 to Capital Area Chapter of the United Way. Since 2005, this location alone has contributed more than $3.5 million dollars to United Way Chapters in Mississippi.

The United Way of the Capital Area encompasses the Hinds, Madison and Rankin county areas of Mississippi. United Way works with member of the community and local businesses to support various attributes of the community. The three most important aspects are investing, advocating and leveraging resources in the area to help solve community issues. Carol Burger, the President and CEO of the United Way of the Capital attributes the success of their programs to the longstanding support from the Canton, Mississippi facility. Nissan, while benefiting the area by providing jobs in income, are still committed to giving back to the community.

Nissan, like other Japanese automakers, are steadily moving operations to the United States. The Canton vehicle assembly plant currently produces the Nissan Altima, Armada, Xterra, both the Frontier and Titan pickups as well as the NV commercial and passenger vans. Later in the year, Nissan is planning to move production of the redesigned Murano to the Canton facility as well as a new addition to the compact end of the Nissan lineup. Adding the additional models will not only make new Nissans more accessible by being built in the United States, it will add more jobs and more money to the local economy.
